Clean beauty is a generalized term coined by the beauty industry to denote a product that uses ingredients that are better for your skin and body than the industry norms. Clean beauty isn’t a regulated term, so any brand can say they’re a clean brand for removing any number of toxic ingredients. BHA & BHT BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) are synthetic antioxidants and preservatives. They have been classified as human carcinogens and may interfere with normal hormone function.
Dibutyl phthalate This compound has been shown to cause developmental defects and to affect the male reproductive system, suggesting that it may interfere with normal hormone function.
Formaldehyde releasing preservatives Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen. These preservatives release small but continuous amounts of the chemical, leading to possible inhalation and absorption risks.
Parabens Many parabens are used as preservatives or in fragrance ingredients. They are suggested to interfere with hormone function. There is a possibility that they can be linked to breast cancer and the male reproductive system.
Parfum Parfum or fragrance is considered a trade secret and fragrance ingredients are not required to be listed on ingredient panels. Because of this, they are unregulated and may contain any number of harsh or irritating chemicals or compounds. You might see "parfum"on our labels, but we use essential oils and natural fragrances whenever possible.
Siloxanes These are silicone based compounds that are used in moisturizers and face creams. Multiple siloxanes are connected to hormone disruptions and reproductive system interference.
Sodium Laureth Sulfate SLES is the ingredient that makes your soap foamy and bubbly. SLES has the potential to be contaminated with ethylene oxide, a known human carcinogen, and 1,4-dioxane, a possible human carcinogen. *All of our facial care lines are currently SLES/SLS free.
Triclosan Triclosan can potentially interfere with hormone function and may contribute to antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Small amounts build up from many different products to create an amount of triclosan that is harmful to the body’s systems.
In addition to the reasons above, many of these ingredients also negatively affect the environment’s wildlife. Specifically, many of these chemicals are toxic to aquatic animals. When you use the products and wash them down the drain in the sink or the shower, many of these compounds pass through water treatment facilities untouched and filter into rivers and lakes nearby.
