I always have to prepare my home with an essential part of green cleaning...essential oils! Essential oils are a convenient and natural way to destroy mildew, mold, viruses, fungus, bacteria, and germs. You may have seen them as prominent ingredients in eco-friendly cleaners, disinfectants, and air fresheners in your every day mart.
Lemon Oil has been used in cleaning products for years, not only for aroma but its cleansing effect. It’s the perfect eco-friendly stain remover and due to its antibacterial properties makes for the ideal all-purpose house cleaner. By adding just a few drops of lemon essential oil into your dish soap, you can give it an extra germ-fighting kick. You can also deodorize your refrigerator by adding lemon oil directly into your fridge’s baking soda box.
Tea Tree Oil is a must-have in any cleaning regimen; it works very well on mildew and mold. It’s perfect for purifying and cleansing counter-tops. It disinfects doorknobs and light switches and is great for cleaning the bathroom. For a cleaning solution, add a couple of drops of tea tree oil to your cleaning solution. This adds extra germ-fighting power, as tea tree is considered to have insecticidal, bactericidal, antiseptic, antimicrobial, and anti-fungal properties.
Not only does lavender smell amazing, but it’s also an effective cleaner and its anti-bacterial properties make it a wonderful insect deterrent. It helps counter odors, cleans surfaces, and my favorite freshens the laundry! I love to make homemade dryer sheets from old used shirts with lavender essential oil. For DIY dryer sheets, cut up an old T-shirt, apply 15 drops of lavender essential oil, mixed with 110ml of vinegar on top of the fabric. Place the dampened cloth in an airtight container, and use them whenever you need to.
Essential oils with purifying properties such as eucalyptus and peppermint oil have been found to remove odors and cleanse the air and would be the perfect addition for an eco-friendly air freshener. Not only do they sanitize and purify the air, but peppermint oil also repels insects. Create your eco-friendly air freshener to freshen your home and keep the bugs away by adding several drops of your favorite oils to a bottle of water and spraying throughout your house.
Essential oils help to cleanse, purify, polish, and energize your atmosphere. There are so many more ways you can utilize these essential oils in cleaning and freshening your home.
